It is our responsibility, as teachers, to provide an unpressured, but challenging environment in which all children can learn successfully at their own rate. This preschool program is designed to provide activities in which a child can experience success in any area and at any level of development. This success gives the child a feeling of self-worth and positive attitude, as well as a desire to learn. A child can develop a positive self-image through individual play activities such as art projects, clay modeling, puzzles, sand play, gymnastics, dramatic play and block building.
The Milford Preschool program emphasizes the importance of positive social interactions and healthy emotional development, as these provide the foundation for all social relations. Group activities include circle games, story time, group discussions, share time, cooking, dramatic play, music activities and cleanup.
Throughout the year, we work on skill development in several areas. Art and Craft activities provide small muscle exercise such as cutting, painting and drawing. Large muscle coordination is developed through gymnastics and playground activities. Felt board games, songs and finger plays introduce the children to numbers, letters and colors.
It is our belief that all of these areas of development: physical, emotional, social and intellectual are of equal importance. The main objective of the Milford Preschool program is to provide each child with a foundation from which he or she can meet the challenge of more complex skills, and will seek the opportunities offered at school, within the framework of an anti-bias curriculum.
This program is designed to meet the needs of young children specifically three to five years old. It provides experiences that enrich and enhance each child's cognitive, language, social, emotional, physical and creative development. Within the center's daily schedule, each child has the opportunities to create, explore the environment, learn problem solving, personal interaction skills and develop concepts through first hand experiences. Children develop a positive self-concept through a balance of self and teacher directed activities. Opportunities for solitary play as well as group activities are provided. Staff serve as positive role models, and provide care that is supportive, nurturing, warm and responsive to each child's individual needs. We respect the family unit as the primary and most important providers of care and nurturing and we believe that parents and teachers are partners in children's care as well as education. |
